Home Office For An Aviation Enthusiast

I was asked to design a home office for an aviation photographer and enthusiast. The home office is tucked away in a large nook that's adjacent to the main living spaces. Since this area is exposed, it had to be both functional and attractive. Our aviation enthusiast loves a modern, neutral, and industrial feel. Here are two moodboards I created!

Office Core Pieces

The main requirement was to incorporate a large L-shaped desk. Here's a trick about L-shaped desks: each side doesn't have to be a traditional desk, especially when one side is against a wall. I used a traditional desk on the open side and a large floating shelf in the same wood tone on the second side against the wall. (This tutorial is a great one to follow for building a heavy-duty floating shelf.) Using a shelf instead of a second desk saves money and streamlines the look.

A comfortable desk chair is a must for long working sessions. This one is a gorgeous caramel brown color and has over 700 5-star reviews. On the other side of the desk are two visiting chairs perfect for when family wants to hang out.

Every office needs storage. I envisioned two different solutions, depending on the storage need. For a minimalist approach, a couple of floating shelves provides more than enough storage. These shelves span the width of the desk and are thick to fill out the wall. Add a few decorative boxes to contain the essentials. For a maximalist approach, why not add a whole wall of storage? The doors on this bookshelf unit has glass on top and wood on the bottom for a mix of storage options.

Office Accessories

I found these art prints that capture our photographer's love of aviation. The art is highlighted by these picture lights. They are rechargeable, remote-controlled, and cordless! For more directional lighting, I included this desk lamp, which doubles as a phone charger.

Finally, no space is complete without greenery. If you don't have a green thumb, opt for a faux tree and drop it in a planter. (See my complete faux tree recommendations HERE.)
